This program examines how a startup called Advanced Symbolics (ASI) uses AI and public social-media data to forecast voter behavior. ASI's new algorithm — Polly — combs social media to build profiles of different demographics and then determines their preferences.This method has already led to Polly’s success in predicting both the 2016 Trump victory and Brexit. With the 2019 Canadian federal election campaign as a real time back drop, this video reveals how AI doesn’t just give a detailed picture of the publics voting intentions, but also illustrates how specific events can alter their views. But how does this promise of new technology affect citizens' privacy? Is AI polling accurate? The program also looks at how every one of us volunteers a huge amount of private data with virtually every Internet service we use, without reading or understanding the terms of service. This data can now be harvested by AI to accurately predict among many other things, how we will vote. What are the social implications of using AI for polling? Will knowing what our hopes and concerns are give politicians the intel they need to respond to our needs, and lead to a “utopian” society, as ASI’s CEO Erin Kelly claims, or can this data be misused to mislead us – either by our own governments, or those of our adversaries? It also, they contend, unifies Americans and ensures that candidates running for office win a majority of votes. A "third party," they contend, would offer nonpartisan solutions and embrace a wider range of ideologies. Some have even promoted No Labels, a group that hopes to nominate a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, but others warn that this would cost Democratic and Republican presidential candidates votes and create chaos. Defund the police. Pass the Green New Deal. Redistribute the wealth. These are but a few of the demands that the most liberal wing of the Democratic Party has voiced in recent years. With the emergence of "The Squad" in 2018—a group of four Democratic members of Congress who embraced various far-left and socialist proposals—some liberal lawmakers have pressed their case more fervently. And with Democrats holding a razor-thin majority in the U.S. Senate and just a few seats shy of a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, progressives are now eyeing 2024 as the year to exert their influence and gain clout. Is this effort to push the party further left a smart strategy for Democrats to broaden their base and gain greater political power? Supporters argue that corporate interests have dominated the party for too long, compromising its values and preventing it from spearheading popular and transformational legislation. By taking clear stands on critical issues—such as race, climate change, and income inequality—the Democratic Party, they contend, can electrify voters and expand their numbers. Opponents, however, argue that pushing the party left is a doomed strategy, bound to fail. When Bill Clinton (D, 1993–2001) was president in the 1990s, they note, only 25 percent of Democrats described themselves as liberal; another 25 percent called themselves conservative, and 48 percent described themselves as moderate. The equating of liberalism with Democratic policies, they contend, is a recent and dangerous trend, which makes governing more difficult and threatens to drive voters away from the party. With a presidential election approaching and both houses of Congress up for grabs in 2024, is the Democratic Party too far left?

Mock Trial: Is Trump Guilty in the Jan. 6th Case?: A Debate

On January 6, 2021, backers of President Donald Trump (R, 2017–21) stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop Congress from certifying the election that Joe Biden (D) had won in November 2020. For weeks, President Trump had claimed that the election was rigged, and that morning he urged a crowd near the White House to "fight like hell." In August 2023, federal prosecutors indicted Trump on four charges: "Conspiracy to Defraud the United States," "Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding," "Obstruction of and Attempt to Obstruct an Official Proceeding," and "Conspiracy Against Rights." The trial is scheduled to begin in 2024. Supporters of Trump being found guilty argue that the former president knowingly made false claims, tried to deceive others in blocking the certification of votes, and that his actions showed criminal intent to defraud the United States. Opponents of Trump being found guilty argue that proof is needed that he had planned to commit a crime, that he was acting within the scope of his presidential duties, and that he followed legal advice. In this "Mock Trial" format, Open to Debate enlists legal experts to act as prosecutors and defenders who present arguments that will likely be heard at the actual trial. Each side will engage directly on the evidence of the case and then be subject to cross-examination by the other. Is Trump guilty in the Jan. 6th case?

Should Artists Be Allowed to Borrow from Cultures Besides Their Own?: A Debate

Artists and other creative people in Western societies have long taken or adapted styles and traditions from other societies, often displaying and incorporating them without context or treating them as "exotic" novelties. When this happens today in modern art, music, fashion, and other fields, some critics accuse artists of appropriating other people's culture, especially if they have borrowed or used traditions specific to a particular minority group. Those who support such cultural borrowing argue that art has always been a medium of exchange, influence, and fusion and that the practice is more cultural appreciation than cultural appropriation. Placing restrictions on inspiration, they contend, may stifle artistic expression. Opponents of cultural borrowing argue that artists are often ignorant of the context and significance of different styles and traditions, and that appropriating them can distort or misrepresent their meaning. The main cause of climate change is the emission into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas that is released by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and coal. To reduce these emissions and slow climate change, some scientists have developed a technology called carbon capture and storage, in which CO2 is extracted and stored in underground facilities. In early 2023, Exxon Mobil, one of the world's largest oil companies, began using this technology to trap some 7 million tons of CO2 each year, and other major companies have offered similar plans. Capturing and burying these dangerous gases, supporters argue, will protect the planet and help prevent climate change. It will also, they contend, enable people to safely use fossil fuels while the world transitions to cleaner forms of energy. But opponents voice skepticism. Carbon capture technology is expensive, unreliable, and untested, they argue, and unrealistic on a large scale. Focusing on this technology, they charge, only distracts from broader efforts to lower emissions and slow climate change. Is carbon capture essential to fighting climate change?

Mock Trial: Murthy v. Missouri: Free Speech, Government, and Misinformation of Social Media Platforms

Does the government have the right to pressure social media platforms to take down posts that spread dangerous misinformation, disinformation, and false claims that threaten public safety? Under the administration of President Joe Biden (D), various federal agencies—including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation's leading health agency; the office of U.S. surgeon general Vivek Murthy; and the Federal Bureau of Investigation—communicated with several top social media platforms in an attempt to clamp down on such misinformation. Two states—Louisiana and Missouri—and five individuals sued these agencies, arguing that such efforts amounted to government censorship, and the case, Murthy v. Missouri, ended up before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2024. Supporters of the Biden administration's efforts argue that government officials communicated with social media companies only about content that posed a serious danger to public health and safety, such as inflammatory political conspiracy theories or lies about proper health measures during a pandemic. Administration officials, they contend, neither coerced social media platforms nor commandeered their decision making. It will free humans to do more high-level tasks, they contend, and create new jobs in the process.
