This series addresses the physiology of pain, explaining the differences between nociceptive and neuropathic pain and their clinical manifestations. It shows various assessment techniques, such as patient interview and the use of standardized tools, and discusses The Joint Commission guidelines and other actions that promote positive patient outcomes. The series examines both acute and chronic pain and the pharmacologic management of each and describes invasive and non-invasive physical interventions, as well as cognitive- behavioral approaches to alleviate discomfort. It also discusses assessment and management of pain in special populations — children, elders, and cognitively impaired or unconscious individuals. Animated graphics and realistic patient care scenarios support and enhance the information presented throughout the series.
