The organization's co-founder, Ha2Tim M.A.C.K-1-a former victim of violence-canvasses the streets and recruits young men to work with him to break the cycle of violence within the community. We see members of the Underground Railroad confronting the experiences of their slave ancestors in a rite called the Sankofa March. The rite encourages youths to cherish their own survival by paying homage to the contributions of their ancestors. Behind the Smoke Screen: Facts about Tobacco Use

Sadly, tobacco use among young people is on the increase. This program, targeted at middle and high school students in both urban and rural areas, tries to persuade viewers not to smoke or chew tobacco, and coaches them on how to quit if they already do. The focus is on the toll which nicotine takes on the body. Graphic examples of people with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cancer of the larynx, and cancerous mouth lesions drive home the point. The effects of smoking during pregnancy, cigar smoking, and secondary smoke are also addressed. Overall, tobacco use is portrayed as an overwhelmingly undesirable habit, likely to hinder social and job prospects, as well as shorten one's life. (30 minutes)

Male Violence: A Room Full of Men

As other family members seek to cope and prevent the destruction of the family, unhealthy behavioral patterns often emerge: spouses face frustration, shame, and a feeling of helplessness, and children try to hide the problem, creating stresses they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. The Karen people are an ethnic minority living amidst ruby mines and valuable teak forests in Burma—and a people whom the military junta there has targeted for eradication. This program follows a small contingent of the Karen National Liberation Army on a mission to bring aid to a threatened village, exploring reasons for the junta’s actions and for why authorities in Burma and the West turn a blind eye to their atrocities. Ironically, it was the notion of political liberty and the natural rights of man that led to the ideology of white supremacy. Ancient peoples stigmatized others on the basis of language, class, and religion, but they did not sort people into races. As the Founding Fathers grappled with the hypocrisy of slavery in the new democracy, Thomas Jefferson was among the first to discuss “the natural inferiority of Africans”—a convenient justification for social inequality, and the same type of thinking that rationalized the seizing of Native American lands. Between 1860 and 1920, hundreds of U.S. counties expelled their African-American residents. The pattern was horrifically similar in almost all cases: a black man was accused of assaulting a white woman, was lynched, and then white rioters attacked black neighborhoods with guns and firebombs. After blacks fled for their lives, whites illegally assumed ownership of the abandoned property. This program places these events in the context of present-day race relations by visiting towns in Georgia, Missouri, and Arkansas where banishments took place. As black and white citizens warily explore the idea of reparations and reconciliation, the film reveals that even one hundred years later these communities tend to uphold the legacy of racial segregation. Who has the authority to define a culture—especially if people from that culture are denied the opportunity to engage in the scholarly discourse of defining themselves? Is there a politics of knowledge? This program examines these questions through a look at the career of pioneering anthropologist Melville J. Herskovits. A son of Jewish immigrants, Herskovits played a decisive role in shaping modern African-American identities. He established the first African Studies Center at an American university and authored the seminal Myth of the Negro Past, yet much of his work was criticized by blacks and whites alike. This documentary traces Herskovits’s development as a scholar of the shared African-American and Jewish experiences of oppression to his establishment as one of the most controversial intellectuals of the 20th century. In the name of the struggle against terrorism, a special operation—code named Condor—was conducted in the 1970s and 1980s in South America. Its targets were left-wing political dissidents, organized labor, and intellectuals. Condor soon became a network of military dictatorships supported by the U.S. State Department, the CIA, and Interpol. This film by Rodrigo Vazquez, a young Argentinian director, tells that story by following several victims of Operation Condor who are fighting for the truth, and by meeting key members of the Condor network who—after 9/11/2001—openly claim being pioneers of the current fight against international terrorism. Ghetto Bully: Young Muslims and Misogynist Violence in Suburban Paris

In the low-income housing blocks of the Paris suburbs, many residents are Muslim immigrants from Sharia-dominated societies, and their children struggle to find a balance between traditional and Western attitudes. In October of 2002, a local teenager named Sohane was attacked and set on fire, soon dying from her injuries. Her killer’s motive? Sohane had spurned his advances, breaking one of the community’s unwritten rules—women have no right to their own choices and must be “submissive.” With that tragedy as a starting point, this film examines issues of gender equality, human rights, religious freedom, and cultural assimilation in the context of Europe’s rapidly growing Muslim populations. Viewers meet a wide range of young French Muslims, both male and female, with equally wide-ranging attitudes—but a thug-like superiority disguised as religious devotion reigns among the teenage men. The work of Ni Putes Ni Soumises (“Neither Whores nor Submissives”), a women’s activist group formed in response to misogynist brutality, is also a major topic. The Battle of Durban II: Israel, Palestine, and the United Nations World Conference against Racism

The 2009 Durban Review Conference, or Durban II, was a follow-up to the UN Human Rights Council’s disastrous 2001 World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, where Palestinian sympathizers denounced Israel as racist, and supporters of Israel charged the UN with “demonization” of Israel. But Durban II proved to be even more divisive than its predecessor, marked by a controversial speech by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and boycotted by Israel and the U.S., among several other countries. This important program examines how the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine dramatically disrupted two successive UN conferences—overshadowing discussions about human rights issues elsewhere—and the attempts to come to an official consensus amid protests and counter-protests. Is solitary inhumane—and even a form of torture? In this ABC News program, reporter Dan Harris volunteers to spend 48 hours “in the hole” at Denver County Jail in an effort to find out. This program looks at the racism and xenophobia brought to the surface by a massive influx of foreign workers and job-seekers into Western Europe; it also describes the search for equitable solutions by moderate EU leaders and citizens. Islamophobia, religious fundamentalism, the radicalization of young Muslim men, and racism in football (or soccer) are all examined. Other dilemmas are unexpected, like having to decide what to wear every morning. Starting in the 1930s, thousands of children across Australia were forcibly taken from their families simply because they were Aboriginal. In this award-winning program, the tragic story is told of a state-sanctioned attempt to assimilate and, thereby, eradicate a race by segregating its full-blooded members and marrying its “half-castes” into the white population for “biological absorption.” Fueled by eugenics theories, the Australian government transported “half-caste” children to far-flung missions for eventual adoption, leaving those behind to die out. What Is Addiction?

This program follows Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as she conducts informal group therapy with addicts and their family members. Volkow points out the environmental, behavioral, and genetic influences that make people vulnerable to addiction and outlines ways in which addiction creates abnormal behavior.
