The program features on-screen interviews with opera stars Martina Arroyo and Teresa Stratas, Broadway legends Harold Prince and Joel Grey, Maestros Richard Bonynge, Zubin Mehta, and Craig Rutenberg, and Ms. Resnik’s brother, Jack H. Resnick. Ms. Arroyo introduces the film onscreen. Renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves is the narrator.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, the transition to screen won an International Emmy. Oklahoma! pioneered stage musicals by telling an emotional story through song lyrics as it had never been done before. It marked the beginning of the legendary Broadway partnership of Rodgers & Hammerstein. The show features some of the most beloved songs in the history of American musicals, including Oh What a Beautiful Morning, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, I Cain't Say No, Many a New Day, Out of My Dreams, Oklahoma! (of course!), two songs missing from the 1955 film production, and more. It is the most honored musical drama of all time, with a Pulitzer Prize, two Academy Awards and an honorary Grammy and Tony. It became the first Broadway musical commemorated in a US postage stamp, and has been voted by New York's influential Drama League as The Best Musical of the Century.

Gianni Schicchi is a comic opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giovacchino Forzano composed in 1917–18. The libretto is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy. The work is the third and final part of Puccini's Il trittico (The Triptych)—three one-act operas with contrasting themes, originally written to be presented together. Although it continues to be performed with one or both of the other trittico operas, Gianni Schicchi is now more frequently staged either alone or with short operas by other composers. The aria "O mio babbino caro" is one of Puccini's best known, and one of the most popular arias in opera.

Georges Bizet‘s captivating music with its Spanish sounds took the world by storm: Carmen‘s Habanera and Seguidilla, like Escamillo‘s Toreador‘s Song, are known to one and all. The French composer‘s most successful opera is staged on a spectacular floating stage on Lake Constance in Bregenz with a set designed by British artist Es Devlin. For the Danish stage director, Kasper Holten, this "opera about destiny and obsession" centers on "two people who are treated as outsiders, whose paths cross and who cling to each other in a passionate, but unhealthy relationship."
