The Inner Journey: Mind and Body—The Healing Arts
BBC Worldwide Learning
The healing relationship between mind and body has long been the subject of debate, but with the advent of scientific medicine in the 19th century, the possibility that the mind could cause or cure illness was broadly ridiculed. Today, however, many in the medical community are coming full circle, with patients and professionals alike turning to the power of faith and hope. This program looks at techniques involving the mind and, as some think, the spirit in healing the body. Viewers visit a clinic at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital designed to maximize the relaxation of hypertension patients, as well as the cardiac unit of Charing Cross Hospital, London, where mind-body approaches are explored. The film also follows a pilgrimage to the Domain in Lourdes, site of apparently miraculous cures and now a “hospital of last resort” for thousands of ailing believers. Dance therapy, meditation, and visualization are also studied. A BBC Production. A part of the series The Healing Arts. (Portions with English subtitles, 50 minutes)
